The northern engineering plant, Sevmash, is an industrial complex located in Severodvinsk, northwestern Russia, 35 kilometers from Archangel.

        The Sevmash big plant, built in 1939, occupies an area of six square kilometers and has a workforce of 30,000. The amount of work it does is upwards of 30 million man-hours a year. Its location enables sufficiently easy access to transport. The city of Severodvinsk is a railway hub, and therefore, manufactured goods may travel to all parts of Russia and CIS countries.

        Sevmash is Russia’s biggest manufacturer of submarines, and the leading producer of submarines for the Russian Navy. Following the Cold War, orders for subs were tapering off until they almost stopped. The plant had to seek civilian orders and modernize its capacities in accordance with civilian market requirements.

        Now, its main lines of activity are the production of military equipment and disposal thereof, the manufacture of heavy-duty equipment for offshore oil and gas production and civilian shipbuilding and the production of technical goods and consumer goods.

        Sevmash has capacities for producing nuclear-powered and diesel-electric submarines displacing up to 25,000 tons, as well as surface ships and special vessels. It is capable of drawing up the entire set of requisite organizational and maintenance documents.

        The general director of Sevmash , David Pashayev, is also President of the Russian State Center for Nuclear Shipbuilding.
